Making an Appointment & What to Expect

Frequently Asked Questions

FAQs

How long will I be in counseling? How many sessions should I expect?

This is dependent on a few factors, such as duration and intensity of symptoms and/or environmental stressors. It also depends on how often you are able to incorporate the tools or information discussed during sessions into your daily life.

If my child is attending counseling, who can bring my child to his/her appointments?

We encourage parents to bring their children as kids often need parent involvement for best results. However, we understand sometimes work or other obligations make this difficult. When this happens, another adult may bring your child only after you have discussed this with your therapist and have signed a release of information. The release of information is a form that grants permission for us to acknowledge to the person bringing the child that your child is in counseling services and so that the counselor can talk to them if the situation warrants.

What are releases of information and who do I need to sign them for?

Releases of Information (ROIs) are signed by you (the client) or a minor’s parent/guardian to grant permission for an exchange of information. This could be for someone to schedule appointments, bring you to appointments, be a part of appointments, or receive information from us. They grant us permission to request information from other important people in your life or the minor’s life to provide the best care possible.

Common people to sign an ROI for include:

Step parents, grandparents, schools, and doctors.

ROIs can be revoked at any time, you just have to tell us. In the case of a minor client, typically the release is valid until your child turns 18 or if you specify a different date. For adults, ROIs are typically valid for one year.
